Jennifer Grey Talks About The Emotional Moment That Changed Her Relationship With Patrick Swayze
Dirty Dancing devotees will recollect Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey's undeniable on-screen connection in the 1980s classic, in addition to the iconic lift moment. During a family vacation, Frances "Baby" Houseman (Grey) falls head over heels in love with attractive dancing teacher Johnny Castle (Swayze). Despite their on-screen chemistry in 1987, things between the two major actors weren't always that rosy in real life.
Grey revealed during an appearance on The View that she was initially hesitant to join the Dirty Dancing ensemble because of a bad experience she had working with Swayze on the 1984 picture Red Dawn. "Patrick was playing pranks on me and everybody. It was just, like, macho, and I just couldn't take it. I was just like, ‘Please, this guy, that's enough with him ,'" she recounted.
Swayze, who died in 2009, took Grey aside during a Dirty Dancing screen test and gave a genuine apology for his previous behaviour. "He dragged me down the corridor and said, 'I love you, I love you, and I'm so sorry.' "And I know you don't want me to do the film,"," Grey said.
"He was crying in his eyes." And I had tears in my eyes for a different cause. "Oh, this man is working me," I thought.
Grey signed on to the film after a successful screen test with the actor, and her opinion of the Ghost star shifted dramatically. "There was no contest." She confessed, "He was like the comfy chair I'd been dreaming about my whole life."
Grey is scheduled to reprise her Dirty Dancing role in a future sequel to the original film, set 35 years after its release, according to the Daily Mail. Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, a prequel to the original film, was released in 2004.
